Dashboards

Overview

Dashboards let you build and view custom, workspace-level views that combine widgets and metrics across DataDios modules for at-a-glance monitoring.

note

More detailed documentation for Dashboards is coming soon.

Card actions

Each card has an action bar in its top-right corner. It appears when you point at the card or tab into it, and it stays showing on touch screens. Which buttons it holds depends on the card and on whose dashboard you are looking at. The buttons are icons: hover one to read what it does. The chart-type buttons read "Show as Line", "Show as Bar" and so on.

ButtonWhat it doesWhere it appears
Chart type (Line, Bar, Table and so on)Draws the card as another view of the same data.Cards whose chart allows more than one view.
Log scaleDraws the y axis in powers of ten, so values that differ by orders of magnitude can share one chart. Its hover text reads "Switch to a log scale", or "Switch to a linear scale" while it is on.Performance Analyzer cards drawn as a plain (unstacked) line.
Show SQL (</>)Shows the query behind the card, read-only. Re-run runs it again for fresh data. While the query is open, the button reads Hide SQL.Your own AI Studio cards that carry a query.
Refresh widgetRuns the card's query again instead of showing a recent result.Every card.
View underlying dataOpens a dialog with the rows the card holds, as a table you can search, sort and page through.Every card that has rows. Not chatbot or timeline cards, and not cards that are blocked or failed. You see it on dashboards shared with you too.
Export widgetOpens a menu with Download CSV (all rows), Download PNG and Download PDF. See Export a card.Every card that has rows. You see it on dashboards shared with you too, and not while the card is fullscreen.
FullscreenFills the screen with the card. The button reads Exit fullscreen while it is on; Esc also leaves.Every card, in a browser that supports fullscreen.
Open in new tabOpens the card on a page of its own in a new browser tab.Every card on a dashboard.
Copy linkCopies the address of that page, and shows "Link copied".Every card, except while the card is fullscreen.
Remove widgetTakes the card off the dashboard straight away. There is no confirmation, and it cannot be undone.Your own dashboards only, and not while the card is fullscreen.

View underlying data

The dialog lists the rows the card already loaded, so it opens at once and asks DataDios for nothing. That can be more than the card draws: most cards preview their first 20 rows (View more shows up to 100), and the dialog holds all of them. A Performance Analyzer card drawn as a table already pages through every row it loaded. Type in the search box to keep the rows that have a matching cell; paging and column sorting work the same way as on a table card.

A card loads at most 1,000 rows. When DataDios cut a longer result, the dialog says so, for example "1,000 of 5,000 rows". When the card kept the newest rows of a longer date range, it reads "Latest 1,000 of 5,000 rows; partial date range". If a refresh fails while the dialog is open, it closes.

Fullscreen

Fullscreen shows the card alone, with its action bar. View underlying data opens inside the fullscreen card. Remove widget is hidden while the card is fullscreen; exit first to remove it. Pie, stat and horizontal bar cards keep their normal size inside the fullscreen view instead of growing to fill it.

An AI Studio card you add from a SQL worksheet on a PostgreSQL, Snowflake or Databricks source runs its query in the database (on Databricks, the catalog) that the worksheet ran it in.

What is saved

On your own dashboard, the chart type and log scale you pick on a Performance Analyzer card are saved with the card. It opens that way next time, on any browser. If DataDios refuses the change, the card goes back to how it was and shows the reason under its title. An AI Studio card's chart-type pick is not saved: it holds until you leave the page. An AI Studio card has no Log scale button.

On a dashboard someone shared with you, your picks change only your own screen. They are not saved, nobody else sees them, and the card is back to the owner's view the next time you open it. That dashboard's cards have no Remove widget or Show SQL button.

Log scale

A Performance Analyzer line card offers Log scale once it has two or more points; a stacked line does not. A log axis needs every value above zero, on every line of the card. If any value is zero, negative or missing, the button is unavailable, and its description says "A log scale needs every value above zero". You can still reach it with the keyboard to read that. The card is then drawn on the usual linear axis, even if you saved log scale earlier. A range that spans many orders of magnitude labels only some of the powers of ten, so the axis stays readable.

Date range

The Dashboard date range button in the dashboard's header changes the time window of every card at once. It is on your own dashboards and on dashboards shared with you.

It starts on Card defaults, where each card keeps the window it was saved with. Pick Last 24 hours, Last 7 days, Last 30 days, Last 90 days or a custom range and press Apply, and every card asks for that window instead. While a range is picked the button is outlined in green and a Reset button appears next to it. Reset puts every card back on its own window.

What is saved

Nothing. The range is not saved to the dashboard, so the owner's cards are unchanged and other viewers do not see your pick. It lives in the page address, so reloading keeps it, and a link you copy while a range is picked opens with the same range for whoever follows it. A link whose custom dates cannot be read opens on Card defaults.

Your browser tab also remembers the last range you picked on each dashboard, so it comes back when you leave the dashboard and return, even with no range in the address. That lasts until you close the tab or press Reset.

A custom range is read in your browser's time zone.

Rolling ranges

A range such as Last 24 hours is worked out when you pick it, and every card shares that one window so their charts line up. It does not move on its own. Press Refresh widget on any card and the range is worked out again from the current time for every card, so "Last 24 hours" is the last 24 hours again. Reloading the page does the same.

A window of a day or less labels the chart axis by hour; a longer one labels it by day.

Cards that ignore the range

Some cards cannot be filtered by date, for example an AI Studio card, whose query is fixed, or a Performance Analyzer card whose query has no date setting. Under a picked range these cards keep their own window and show Not filtered by date under the title.

Drill into a card

On a Performance Analyzer card, click a bar, or its label on the axis, to look one level deeper inside the card. A cost-per-provider card, for example, becomes the cost per data source of the provider you clicked. Only a chart whose metric has a deeper level responds: its bars and labels are buttons, and the pointer changes over them. Other cards, and tables, do not drill.

A small trail appears in the card's header. It starts with the card's own title, then lists each value you clicked, for example "Total Cost by Provider › AWS_service". Click an earlier entry to jump back to it, or the back arrow to go up one level. A card drills up to five levels deep.

If the value you clicked is only part of a bigger view, an Open full view link appears after your first click. It opens that value on the Performance Analyzer page. That page uses its own time range, not the dashboard's. Some cards have no deeper level of their own, and a click on one opens Performance Analyzer straight away. A card whose data source Performance Analyzer does not list, such as the cost charts pinned from FinOps, offers neither.

If the value you clicked, together with the dashboard date range, leaves no rows, the card says "No rows for" followed by the values you clicked and, when a date range is picked, the window. Clear drill puts the card back on its own chart. When DataDios cannot show a level, it gives its reason beside Clear drill, and Retry.

What is saved

Nothing. A drill is not saved to the dashboard, so the owner's card is unchanged and other viewers do not see yours. It lives in the page address, so reloading keeps it and a link you copy while a card is drilled opens drilled for whoever follows it. A drilled card has no chart-type or Log scale button.

Dashboards shared with you

You can drill the cards of a dashboard that was shared with you, in the same way. On a shared dashboard you can drill only into values the card already showed you at that step: the bars or series on a chart, and any cell on a table. DataDios refuses anything else. The dashboard's owner is not limited this way.

Switch axis

Some cards have sibling charts: other metrics from the same group that draw the same kind of chart in the same unit. The Cost Dashboard's cost and token charts pinned from FinOps have them, for example cost by provider, by datasource and by service. When a card has one, a Switch axis list sits under the chart. It names the chart on screen first, then each other chart you can switch to by its title. Pick one and the card redraws as that chart. Many cards have no sibling, and those show no list.

The trail in the card's header then reads the card's own title, then the chart you picked. Click the card's title in the trail, or pick the card's original chart in the list, to go back.

A pick replaces an earlier pick, and a drill you make afterwards adds levels after it. While a card is drilled, the list is hidden. Click the card's title in the trail to remove the drill, and the list returns. While a card shows a switched chart, it has no chart-type or Log scale button.

What is saved

Nothing. A switch is not saved to the dashboard, for the owner or for someone viewing a shared dashboard. It lives in the page address, so reloading keeps it and a link you copy opens on the same chart. If the chart you picked cannot be shown, the card gives the reason beside Clear drill, and the list stays so you can pick another.

One card on its own page

Open in new tab and Copy link lead to a page that shows just that card, filling the window, with the dashboard's name and the card's title above it. It works on your own dashboards and on dashboards shared with you; a card on a shared dashboard gets a link under the shared address, which only people the dashboard is shared with can open. Anyone who opens a link needs access to the dashboard.

The link carries the dashboard date range you had picked, so the card opens on the same window. You can change the range on the card's page too. A card's own page shows the card as it is on the dashboard: you can still change its chart type, but there is no Remove widget button, and no Open in new tab button either. Back to dashboard returns to the dashboard with the range kept. If the card has been removed since the link was made, the page says so and offers the same way back.

Present

Present in the dashboard's header runs the dashboard as a slideshow: one card at a time, filling the screen, in the order the cards appear on the dashboard: top to bottom, then left to right. It is on your own dashboards and on dashboards shared with you. The date range picked on the dashboard applies to every slide.

A range such as Last 24 hours is worked out when you pick it, and the slideshow does not move it on by itself. A slideshow left running for hours keeps asking for the window it started with, until you press Refresh widget on a slide. That works the range out again from the current time, as it does on the dashboard.

The slideshow moves to the next card every 10 seconds. It holds still while the pointer or keyboard focus is on the card. Pause stops it until you press Resume. Use the Previous widget and Next widget buttons or the left and right arrow keys to move yourself. The counter shows where you are, for example "2 / 5". The slide number is in the page address, so reloading stays on the same card.

Present also asks the browser for full screen. If the browser refuses, which can happen after a reload, the Fullscreen button asks again. Press Exit, or Esc, to go back to the dashboard. While the slideshow is full screen the browser takes the first Esc to leave full screen, and the slideshow closes with it. A dashboard with no cards has nothing to present.

Export a card

Export widget in the card's action bar saves what the card shows as a file. It follows the card as it is on your screen: the dashboard date range, any drill you made and any chart you switched to. On a dashboard shared with you, you can export exactly what the dashboard's owner can.

Menu itemWhat you get
Download CSV (all rows)A CSV of the card's rows, up to 50,000. It is a fresh request, so it holds more than the card draws (most cards preview 20 rows, and a card loads at most 1,000). An AI Studio card runs its saved query again with a limit of 50,000.
Download PNGA picture of the chart under the card's title and subtitle. It is in the menu only for a card that draws a chart: not for a table, a number card or an empty card. A legend that sits outside the chart, such as the series names beneath a multi-series line, is not in the picture.
Download PDFThe card on a landscape page. A chart is drawn as a vector, so it stays sharp when you zoom in. A table or number card is printed as a table of the rows on screen: the first 20, or up to 100 once you pressed View more.

When the result is cut

A query that returns more than 50,000 rows is cut at 50,000. The file name says so, for example big-balances-first-50000-of-120000-rows.csv, and a message reads "50,000 of 120,000 rows exported". A CSV has no room for a note of its own, so the name and the message are where it says.

A large export can take a few seconds. A "Preparing the CSV…" message shows while it runs, and the Export button ignores clicks until it is done. If you leave the page first, nothing is downloaded.

An AI Studio card cannot count past the limit, so for it the name reads big-balances-first-50000-rows.csv and the message reads "First 50,000 rows exported; the result has more".

Cells that start with a formula character

A spreadsheet runs a cell that begins with =, +, - or @ as a formula. In a CSV exported from a dashboard card, and in the Excel file a scheduled email attaches, a text cell that begins with one of those characters, or with a tab, gets a single quote in front of it, so it opens as plain text. A cell that is only a number, such as -42 or +3.5, is left as it is, so a negative figure keeps its sign.

Export a dashboard

Export in the dashboard's header saves the whole dashboard. It is on your own dashboards, next to Share, and on dashboards shared with you. A dashboard with no cards has nothing to export, so the button is not shown.

Menu itemWhat you get
Layout PDFOne PDF on landscape pages that keeps the dashboard's layout: the cards in the dashboard's order, each as wide as it is on screen (half, three quarters or full width), wrapping onto new rows the way the dashboard does.
One PDF per card (zip)A zip with one PDF for each card, numbered in the dashboard's order, for example 01-costliest-tables.pdf.

Every card is printed the way Download PDF prints it, in the state it is showing now. A card that cannot load is printed with a short note instead of its data, and the rest of the file is still made. On a dashboard shared with you, a card that runs the owner's own SQL is not available to viewers, so it is printed with the line "Not available to viewers of a shared dashboard." and is never left out. A card that has neither rows nor a chart to print, such as a chatbot, timeline or insight card, is printed with the line "Nothing to export for this card."

Cards you have not scrolled to

A card asks for its data only when it comes near the screen, so on a long dashboard some cards have not loaded. The export loads them for you, three at a time. While it works the header reads "Preparing card 3 of 12…" and Export is inactive while Cancel export appears beside it. Cancel export stops it and nothing is downloaded. Leaving the page also stops it.
