Switching between the classic and redesigned UI

An on-prem DataDios installation can serve two user interfaces from the same address: the classic UI at /, and the redesigned UI at /v2/. When your administrator turns the switch on, each user picks the one they want, and DataDios remembers that choice for their account. You stay signed in when you switch.

If your administrator hasn't turned the switch on, nothing on this page appears and everyone uses the classic UI.

For users

Open the redesigned UI

  1. In the classic UI, hover over your avatar and username to open your profile menu.
  2. Click Try the new UI. The redesigned UI opens at /v2/, and you are still signed in.

From then on, opening DataDios at / takes you to the redesigned UI.

Go back to the classic UI

  1. In the redesigned UI, open your profile menu, shown as the first letter of your name.
  2. Click Back to classic UI. The classic UI opens, and you are still signed in.

From then on, opening DataDios at / keeps you in the classic UI.

Signing in

Sign-in always happens on the classic sign-in page, including when your session expires while you are using the redesigned UI. That page offers every sign-in method your installation has, including Google and Microsoft sign-in. After you sign in, you go back to whichever UI you chose last.

If you chose the redesigned UI, you land on its home page after signing in, not on the page you were on when your session ended.

If the redesigned UI doesn't work for you

Open DataDios at /?ui=v1 — for example, https://datadios.example.com/?ui=v1. This opens the classic UI and saves the classic UI as your choice, so later visits open it too.

DataDios does the same thing on its own if signing in to the redesigned UI keeps failing: rather than sending you back and forth between the two sign-in pages, it opens the classic UI and saves it as your choice. Signing out yourself doesn't trigger this.

To return to the redesigned UI afterwards, click Try the new UI again.

What changes your saved choice

Three things change which UI opens for you:

  • Clicking Try the new UI in the classic UI.
  • Clicking Back to classic UI in the redesigned UI.
  • The classic-UI fallback: opening /?ui=v1, or a sign-in to the redesigned UI that keeps failing.

The choice is stored with your account, so it follows you to other browsers and devices. It doesn't appear in Profile → Configure.

Links to /legacy/... from earlier versions redirect to the same page under /v2/.

For administrators

The switch is off by default. While it is off, users see neither Try the new UI nor Back to classic UI, and any saved choice is ignored: opening DataDios at / always opens the classic UI.

Turn the switch on

The switch is controlled by one environment variable on the DataDios application container:

VariableDefaultTurns the switch onAnything else
ENABLE_NEW_UIOfftrue, 1, yes, y or on (any case)Off, including an empty value

Where you set it depends on how DataDios was installed:

  • Installed with the scripts from the Ubuntu or Windows installation guide: in the docker-compose file the installer created, set the ENABLE_NEW_UI line in the DataDios service's environment: list. Add the line if the file doesn't have one.
  • Using the docker-compose-on-prem.yaml or docker-compose-self-signed-ssl.yaml files: these read it from the .env file next to them, so add ENABLE_NEW_UI=true there.
  1. Set ENABLE_NEW_UI to true, as above.
  2. Recreate the container: run the guide's start script again (run_datadios.sh or RunDatadios.ps1), or run docker compose up -d in the same directory. A plain docker restart keeps the old environment, so the change doesn't take effect.
  3. Once DataDios is back up, open /get_deployment_details on your DataDios address (for example, https://datadios.example.com/get_deployment_details) and check that it shows "new_ui_enabled": true.

The switch also needs an image that includes the redesigned UI. With an image that doesn't, new_ui_enabled stays false even when ENABLE_NEW_UI is on.

Turn the switch off

  1. Set ENABLE_NEW_UI to false, in the same place you turned it on.
  2. Recreate the container the same way.

Both buttons disappear, and opening DataDios at / opens the classic UI for everyone from their next page load. The redesigned UI stays reachable by typing its /v2/ address, but nothing sends users there. Each user's saved choice is kept, so it applies again if you turn the switch back on.

Known limits

  • The redesigned UI has areas the classic UI doesn't, such as DioS, lineage, AI Studio and the entity catalog. A user who switches sees them.
  • DioS isn't available on on-prem installations yet. The service behind it isn't part of the on-prem image, so the DioS page opens but starting a conversation fails with an error.
  • Manage → Observability → Audit trail and Manage → Platform → Backups show "Coming soon".
  • Impact analysis in lineage isn't available yet.
  • Microsoft and Google sign-in work on the classic sign-in page, which the redesigned UI uses (see Signing in).
  • The redesigned UI works over plain HTTP as well as HTTPS.
  • The on-prem image is built for linux/amd64 only.
